Beauty in the Homeschool

What I really want is more BEAUTY in our homeschool. That goes for physical setting, books read, thoughts pondered, tone of voice, the whole shebang. I am slowly determining that education is not only about enculturation (which it was for those classical educators), or about teaching skills (or even “art” as in the trivium or quadrivium arts), but about ordering the soul, which is both a Platonic and Christian idea. Beauty is what orders the soul, creates a harmony in us, a sense of wholeness, proportion, value, balance, purpose. My kids are so disjointed and out-of-whack. As am I. As is our whole modern world — all of creation since the Fall. But how to do it? I’m so used to stuffing information in their heads, rapping their little knuckles to master skills, challenging them with concepts. Where IS the beauty of homeschooling?

Oh man...I'll be jumping in there soon. My Ana just turned 4 and we're going to start in the fall...

When you figure it out...let me know!
